Sony Camera Information

The dedicated control software for shadowless lamps works in conjunction with the surgical video camera to solve the problem of light spots in the operating room

The accuracy of medical imaging is directly related to the success rate of surgery. Under the shadowless lamp, this precision has long been confronted with a stubborn challenge – overexposure of the light spot.

On the evolutionary path of digital operating rooms, whether the surgical video camera can clearly present every detail of the tissue is of vital importance. However, when the strong light emitted by the shadowless lamp shines on the surface of surgical instruments or tissues, if the reflected light exceeds the dynamic range of the image sensor of the surgical video camera, it will cause the problem of overexposure of the light spot.

In the past, to solve the problem of overexposure of light spots, the conventional approach was to adopt the strategy of lowering the global exposure setting of the camera. However, this approach often brings about a new contradiction: although it supposes overexposure in the bright areas, it leads to the details of the underilluminated dark areas (such as deep cavities) in the surgical video being unable to be clearly seen due to insufficient exposure, making it difficult to balance “preserving the details of the bright areas” and “presenting the information of the dark areas”.

I. Pain Points of surgical Vision: The challenge of light spots under the shadowless lamp
In medical scenarios such as neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and cardiovascular surgery, where extremely high operational precision is required, doctors rely heavily on clear and accurate visual information when making surgical decisions. However, under the illumination of the shadowless lamp, the surgical images often show local overexposure and distortion, with the problem of light spots being particularly prominent.

The negative impact brought about by this phenomenon should not be underestimated. It not only hinders the implementation of remote consultations and the effectiveness of teaching, but more seriously, it may interfere with doctors’ precise judgment of subtle lesions. Especially when using a lens for zooming and magnifying operations, the light spot will spread accordingly, causing the key details of the core surgical video to be lost. This undoubtedly becomes a major “roadblock” on the development path of precision medicine.

To solve the shadow problem, a multi-lamp head design scheme is currently adopted. However, while this solution reduces shadows, it also brings about a new problem – light spot superposition. In the areas where light spots overlap, there may be situations where the brightness is too high or the light intensity distribution is uneven, which undoubtedly further increases the visual burden on doctors.

Ii. The Solution: A Comprehensive Solution of Software and Hardware Synergy
Facing this long-standing technical challenge, leading enterprises in the industry have proposed a three-dimensional collaborative solution, making comprehensive innovations at the hardware, algorithm and system levels.

1. Hardware breakthrough: Solve the problem of overexposure from the source
The new generation of Suye cameras has achieved a major breakthrough in performance. Their core adopts SONY’s integrated cores, such as the FCB-EV9520L and FCB-ER8530 models. These cores are equipped with the latest generation of CMOS sensors, which are like endowing the cameras with a pair of sharp and intelligent “eyes”. With the aid of advanced multi-frame synthesis technology, it can easily cover a high dynamic range. When capturing images, it can not only simultaneously retain the clear details of the bright areas illuminated by the shadowless lamp, but also precisely present the subtle features of the dark parts of the tissue, making every key piece of information in the surgical image nowhere to hide.

Not only that, SONY’s all-in-one movement also features a remarkable function – it can achieve true color reproduction in high-brightness environments, effectively suppress the formation of light spots, prevent light spots from interfering with the surgical video of view, and present doctors with a clear, true and accurately colored surgical scene, facilitating more precise and smooth surgeries.

2. Technical collaboration: Perfectly eliminate light spots
In order to perfectly solve the problem of light spots in shadowless lamps, Xuanzhan Technology independently developed a dedicated control software for shadowless lamps and obtained a software copyright patent (software software registration number: 2017SR557533).

The dedicated control software has become an intelligent bridge connecting the shadowless lamp and the surgical video camera. This breakthrough technology has overcome the stubborn bottleneck of overexposure of light spots in digital operating rooms, providing core support for surgical demonstrations and remote consultations with the ability to restore the true color of clinical-grade images.

The laser-assisted positioning system guides the camera to precisely aim at the core area of the surgical video, avoiding direct exposure of the lens to the reflective Angle and physically reducing the possibility of light spot formation.

3. Algorithm-driven: Dynamic adaptation to the surgical environment
The spectral customization algorithm for shadowless lamps can analyze the spectral characteristics of different brands of shadowless lamps, dynamically adjust the gamma curve and white balance, and specifically eliminate reflected light spots in specific bands.

The automatic strong light suppression function analyzes the brightness distribution of the picture in real time, accurately locates the overexposed areas (such as the reflection points of instruments), and dynamically adjusts the local exposure parameters to reduce the spot brightness to a reasonable range without affecting the display of the surrounding tissues.
