So, what is the specific difference between 3G-SDI and HD-SDI?
With the advent of high definition (HD) video standards such as 1080i and 720P, the interface was adapted to handle higher 1.485Gbps data rates. The 1.485-Gbps serial interface, often referred to as the HD-SDI interface, is defined by the SMPTE292M, which uses the same 75 ohm coaxial cable. SMPTE approved a new standard called SMPTE424M, which doubles the SDI data rate to 2.97Gbps over the same 75 ohm coaxial cable. This standard, also known as 3-Gbps (3G) SDI, supports higher resolution image quality such as 1080P and digital cinema.
In terms of resolution (digital pixels), from the standard definition era to HD, from 720×576 to the current 1920×1080, aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9, which is more familiar to us, 4K is actually built on the basis of HD, we call it Ultra HD, From 400,000 pixels at 720×576 to around two million pixels at 1920×1080 in HD. In terms of 4K, our resolution has increased by 4 times on the basis of HD, from 1920×1080 (1080p60) to 3840×2160 (2160p60), that is, the horizontal is 1920×2, the vertical is 1080×2, the resolution has increased by 4 times, what has not changed, is the aspect ratio has not changed, Again 16:9, why is it called QFHD? SMPTE organization officially released 6G-SDI and 12G-SDI of serial data interface in 2015. 6G-SDI is designed for 2160p30 applications and corresponds to 30 frames per second refresh. 12G-SDI is for 2160p60 (commonly known as true 4K) applications, corresponding to 60 frames per second refresh.
