CCD and CMOS sensors are two widely used image sensors at present. What is the difference between the two in the principle and function of sensing technology? What kind of sensor does SONY FCB series auto focus camera use? What are the advantages?
Both CCD and CMOS sensors use photodiode to convert images into digital data, but the main difference is the different way of digital data transmission.
CCD and CMOS sensor
I. Principle of sensing technology
1. CCD
Camera CCD refers to the Charge CoupLED DevICe (Charge CoupLED DevICe), it uses a highly sensitive semiconductor material, can convert light into charge, through the analog-to-digital converter chip into digital signal, digital signal after compression by the camera internal flash memory or built-in hard disk card to save, Therefore, the data can be easily transmitted to the computer, and with the help of computer processing means, according to the needs and imagination to modify the image. A CCD consists of a number of light-sensitive units, usually in millions of pixels. When the CCD surface is illuminated by light, each photosensitive unit will reflect the charge on the component, and the signal generated by all the photosensitive units together constitutes a complete picture.
CCD can be divided into linear CCD and planar CCD according to different structures. Array CCD is divided into full frame type, frame transfer type, line transfer type, TDI type, and so on.
2. CMOS
CMOS in camera refers to Complementary Metal-Oxide SEMIconductor, which can record light changes in digital camera like CCD. The manufacturing technology of CMOS is no different from that of general computer chips. It is mainly made of semiconductors made of silicon and germanium, which coexist with N (electrically charged) and P (electrically charged) semiconductors on CMOS. The current generated by these two complementary effects can be recorded and interpreted into images by the processing chip.
CMOS sensor
Second, the prospect of CCD and CMOS sensor
CCD is superior to CMOS in image quality, while CMOS has the characteristics of low cost, low power consumption and high integration. However, with the progress of CCD and CMOS sensor technology, the difference between the two will gradually decrease. The new generation of CCD sensor has been improving the power consumption, while CMOS sensor is insufficient in improving the resolution and sensitivity. We believe that the improved CCD and CMOS sensors will bring us a better digital image world.
Third, CMOS sensors become the mainstream
However, in most visible light imaging applications, CMOS imaging performance is better than CCD, which is why CMOS has gradually replaced CCD in most application fields.
SONY FCB auto focus camera H series, EH/CH series, EV/CV series, ER/CR series are all using CMOS sensors, its resolution and sensitivity are also constantly improving, in SONY’s new generation of cameras, The FCB-EV9500M uses a 1/1.8-inch STARVIS CMOS sensor with 30x enhanced optical zoom for high definition, high sensitivity and high sensitivity, highlighting the advantages of CMOS.
