There are three aspects to pay attention to when upgrading 3G-SDI to 4K UHD 12G-SDI interface:

1. Transmission interface: video based on SDI or IP (10G Ethernet)

1. Transmission interface: video based on SDI or IP (10G Ethernet)

Broadcasters and other content providers have used SDI for uncompressed video delivery for many years, and there is a whole infrastructure to support its operation. However, IP (Internet Protocol) transport over Ethernet interfaces is becoming more common. And IP solutions dramatically reduce costs, provide flexibility in infrastructure implementations, and increase scalability for higher data rates, all driven by the proliferation of Ethernet in data centers and other communications infrastructure applications.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has defined interfaces based on SDI (ST-2082 for 12G-SDI) and 10G Ethernet (SMPTE-2022-5/6) for 4K video transmission. Your system interface choice depends on the target infrastructure on the market. In most cases, you may need to support interfaces that maximize addressability, or satisfy your customers’ requirements for a heterogeneous video network. In such cases, it is wise to design your hardware to support both SDI and IP, and use software to select the appropriate transport interface.


2. Transmission medium: coaxial cable or optical fiber?

Higher speed data transfer using 12G-SDI (or 10G Ethernet for IP video transmission) increases losses in the transmission medium and reduces the total supported cable length between the video source and the receiver.

Fiber optics can be used as an alternative transmission medium for applications that require longer transmission distances, but the system costs more. By using common form elements, you can use modules specifically designed to support out-of-order SDI video frames, including common extreme harsh environment data or modules that meet the SFF-8431 technical specifications for 10G Ethernet video based applications transmitted over IP.


3. Transmission speed: 3G-SDI or 12G-SDI?

Currently, there are three ways to stream 4K video through the SDI interface. One of them is the dumb method, in this method, there are four cable interfaces, each interface carries 3G video data, the second method compresses 12G data into a single 3G interface, and the third method transmits uncompressed video through the 12G-SDI interface.
